Green Party name Sedgefield candidate

Sedgefield

The Green Party has today selected its candidate for the Sedgefield By-Election.

Chris Haine, a Humanist Officiant, is a prominent member of the Green Party in the North East where he has been working for the past few years to raise the profile of the Greens across the region.

Chris said: "The electors of Sedgefield are used to being in the national spotlight. This election, called at very short notice by an arrogant Labour Party, is a chance for voters to change the political landscape by electing Britain's first Green MP.

"This election may well become a referendum on the greatest issue of our generation. It is time for political change to meet the challenge of climate change."

Green Party Principal Speaker Derek Wall, who will be campaigning in the constituency during the final week of the campaign, welcomed the news:

"Sedgefield voters will be able to vote for independence from US foreign policy, an end to the disasterous war in Iraq, for real action on climate change and to defend the NHS.

"Chris is an example of a dynamic new breed of Green Party activists who will bring real integrity to a campaign that will otherwise be a dreary example of the old Grey politics. The British Parliament could be transformed by the election of its first Green MP. Given public concern for so many of the issues that are central to the Green Party, there has never been a better time for the voters of Sedgefield to put their constituency on the map again - this time for the right reasons."

A well known and much respected member of the community, thanks to his sensitive work as a Humanist Officiant, Chris has gained a great knowledge of the worries and concerns of voters in the North East. Chris believes the Sedgefield By-Election is a unique opportunity for people to express their impatience and anger with the government - especially at its lack of serious progress in tackling climate change.
